Ragdolls have their pros and cons!

Ragdolls

Ragdoll cats are generally known for their calm affectionate nature, but they do come with a few common health and behavioural issues worth knowing about:

1. Genetic health conditions - One of the biggest concerns is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a hereditary heart condition that can affect Ragdolls more than many other breeds. Responsible breeders often screen for it, but it’s still something to monitor with regular vet checkups.

2. Weight gain and obesity - Ragdolls are laid-back and not especially active, which makes them prone to gaining weight. Overfeeding or lack of exercise can quickly lead to obesity, which then increases the risk of diabetes and joint issues.

3. Urinary tract problems - Like many cats, Ragdolls can develop urinary issues!

4. Dental disease - They can be prone to gum disease and tartar buildup if dental care is neglected. Regular brushing or dental treats can help prevent this.

5. Hair matting and grooming needs - Although their coats are silky rather than dense, Ragdolls still need regular brushing. Without it, they can develop tangles or mats, especially around the legs and chest.

6. Sensitivity to heat - Their thick coats make them less tolerant of hot environments. They’re more comfortable in cooler indoor settings.

7. Separation anxiety and dependency - Ragdolls are very people-oriented and may struggle if left alone for long periods. This can lead to stress or attention-seeking behaviours. We'd recommend getting them a sibling!

8. Injury risk due to temperament - They’re famously relaxed (sometimes going limp when picked up), but that also means they may not be as street-smart or defensive outdoors. They’re generally safer as indoor cats.

If you’re considering getting one, the main things to focus on are choosing a reputable breeder, keeping their diet controlled, and staying consistent with vet visits. If you already have one, I can help you spot early warning signs for any of these issues.
