Find out with our little interview with Kate from Woodruffe Dog Walking

We’d love for you to introduce yourself and find out a little bit more about how you found yourself working as a dog walker.
"If someone had told me six years ago that I’d swap my nursing career for walking dogs and caring for animals, I’d never have believed it. Life took some unexpected turns after my son Toby was born with complex health needs, and later, after losing him, I needed to find purpose again.
Starting Woodruffe Dog Walking gave me just that. Now, I get to spend my days with the happiest companions around, offering solo walks or small, relaxed groups of up to five dogs at a time. Seeing their tails wag and knowing I’ve made a difference truly means the world."
What have you learnt so far from your experiences?
"I’ve learnt that every dog is completely unique, what works for one might not work for another. Building trust, staying calm, and reading their body language makes such a difference. I’ve also learnt how important clear communication with owners is, so we can work together to keep their dogs happy, confident, and safe."
What do you find most enjoyable when walking dogs?
"I love seeing how much joy and freedom dogs get from their walks, whether it’s racing around with their friends, having a good sniff, or just trotting happily beside me. I only ever walk solo or small groups, so every walk feels calm, personal, and tailored to the dogs I’m with.
It’s lovely to watch their confidence grow, see new friendships form, and know that for them, this really is the best part of their day."
What advice do you have for owners that want to enhance their dog walks?
"Try to make walks more about your dog than the distance. Let them sniff, explore, and make choices, it’s their way of reading the world! Mixing up routes and adding short training games or recall practice also keeps things fun and mentally stimulating. A good walk should leave them calm and content, not just tired."
What do you find most challenging in your area of work?
"Probably the British weather! But aside from that, balancing different personalities and energy levels within group walks can be tricky, it takes time to get the right mix so every dog feels comfortable and safe. It’s a constant learning curve, but one that’s really rewarding."
How can people find out more information about you?
"You can find me on Facebook and Instagram at Woodruffe Dog Walking, where I share updates, photos, and tips from our adventures. I’m always happy to chat with new owners about what their dog needs and how I can help."
