Overall this breed is loving, a devoted loyal companion and charming. They are amazing family dogs and have a beautiful blend of courage, bravery and affection.

These dogs were originally bred for bull and bear-baiting in the 19th Century, and later for dog fighting hence their amazing agility and courage, however unlike other fighting breeds they were bred to be affectionate with people and as these cruel sports were outlawed their positive qualities broke through.

Their temperaments are commonly misunderstood (despite being one of the most current popular household family breeds), they are very much people-dogs, and are often referred to as 'nanny dogs' due to their patience, gentleness and tolerance to children. Staffies adore a loving home and family life. Their balanced loyalty and courage makes them great watchdogs even though they were not bred specifically for this.

Due to their history, the bull breeds, especially the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, face unfair misconceptions and scrutiny, such as 'aggressive' or 'dangerous'. They are occasionally perceived as a banned breed which is completely false, they are a recognised kennel club breed.
