Is a Halti your answer?

dog wearing a halt

It's hard to know what's best for your dog when sifting through all the information out there. From leads, harnesses, halti and collars, it's difficult to know what's the best combination. For this article, we're exploring the halti - pros, cons and to things to be mindful of. A Halti, also known as a head collar or head halter, which is a training tool that fits around a dog’s nose and head, giving you more control over where they move. It’s commonly used for dogs that pull on the lead.

Here’s a clear look at the upsides and downsides, and then we'll talk about things to be mindful of.. so here's the pros:

  • Better control with less force because it gently guides the dog’s head so you can steer their whole body without needing to pull hard. This makes it especially useful for large or strong dogs.

  • Reduces pulling quickly as many dogs stop pulling almost immediately since the Halti redirects their forward motion rather than fighting against it.

  • Safer for your arms and back experiences less strain compared to handling a dog on a standard collar or even some harnesses.

  • Helpful training aid which can reinforce loose-lead walking when used alongside consistent training techniques.

Here is the list for cons:

  • It does require proper introduction as dogs often dislike it at first. Without gradual training, they may paw at it, freeze, or try to rub it off.

  • A Halti is not a standalone solutionIt manages behaviour but doesn’t teach it by itself—you still need training for long-term results.

  • There is an increased risk of neck strain if misused because if your dog lunges suddenly, the turning force on the head can cause discomfort or injury if the lead is jerked.

  • Some dogs never fully accept it as certain dogs remain uncomfortable wearing one, even with training.

Things to be mindful of.. Age! Depending on your dog's age, this can influence the use of the halti. Although we strongly advise to delay use, you can technically use the halti at 8 - 16 weeks as long as the halti is lightweight and you're gentle. We actually recommend puppies of 4 - 6 months age as it can be more useful during adolescents, as it can a useful training tool.
