Is Your Cat Missing These?

Find out which other apparatus your cat needs for better enrichment.

Three cats playing

A common problem with indoor cats is a lack of mental stimulation and exercise, therefore developing behavioural issues and becoming overweight. There are a wide variety of different types of equipment that can really make a positive impact on your cat/cats wellbeing. In this blog, we'll go over what pieces of apparatus you might not have heard of and what can be best for cat based on temperament and energy levels.

Cat Cubby, Trees & Condos:

First of all, what's better, a cat tree or cat condo? Well, a cat tree is for fun and playtime, whilst a cat condo is for rest. You're probably familiar with a cat tree as they are a good all-round 'gym' for your cat; with scratching posts, jumps, pads and interactive toys.

A condo will be perfect for cats who can be more anxious, as the enclosed space will help them feel safe and secure, whilst also providing a nest-like retreat to escape to if they get stressed.

Another piece of furniture to consider is a cat cubby. These are very similar to a condo, however they have slits/holes in so the cat can 'spy' on their surroundings whilst also feeling protected when taking a nap or relaxing.

Cat Bridges, Hammocks and Shelves:

This is pretty self explanatory. Bridges are used to connect other parts of a cat 'run' and have a much more entertaining design than a standard shelf.

A one up from a cat bridge (if you're willing to comprise on design) is a hammock. They are the perfect combination of a functional walkway and a cat bed. You can make the hammock a cosy space where the cat can relax and have a full view of it's surroundings, whilst still being a sturdy surface for them to traverse from.

Shelves are great for creating an accessible pathway up and down the wall. However, they can also be made very cosy with their favourite blankets and toys. It can pose as a more simple cat condo, with slightly raised walls to allow for the 'safe space' feel (even better if they are placed in the corner of a room).

Scratching Posts

We all know how much cats love to scratch and these posts are a great combination of climbing, scratching and play. Scratching is so important for a cats physical health like claw health and muscle strengthening, and for satisfying their natural instincts like territorial marking.

What To Consider

If you have a kitten or an old cat then having the same pieces of apparatus won't be suitable for each of the cats needs. So, what should you consider based on the type of cat or cats you have?

  • High energy: For kittens and young cats with lots of curiosity and energy, you can go to town with the equipment you choose. They particularly love climbing and scratching poles.

  • Older cats: Lounging and nesting spots will be most appropriate with aging cats and cats with mobility issues. Take out the big jumps that they used to do and replace them with easily accessible ramps up to their favourite hiding spots. Exercise is still very necessary, just make sure they have places to rest.

  • Shy cats: Similar to older cats, they will want lots of nesting spots. However, this will be due to them wanting a safe space to feel protected when they are stressed or anxious. They will most likely be happy observing their surroundings from a high spot that makes them feel guarded.

  • Multiple cats: This could be where it gets tricky if you have varying temperaments, ages etc. To cater for everyone, create a spacious run where all cats can have access to their favourite thing. Also, be aware that conflicts could break out if there aren't multiple routes up and down the run. On the other hand, have group hang out spaces where they can relax together.
