Common Problems of British Shorthair Cats..

British Shorthair Cats, we love you!

British Shorthair cats are generally sturdy and easy going, but like any pedigree breed they do have some common health and lifestyle issues to watch for. We recommend looking at this list to make yourself aware before you introduce a British shorthair cat into your life. Here is their common health problems:
1. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) - this is the most notable concern. It’s a form of heart disease where the heart muscle thickens.
2. Obesity - British Shorthairs are famously laid-back so this can lead to weight gain as it's normally hard to get them to play and they love their treats.
3. Dental issues - they can be prone to plaque buildup and gum disease.
4. Joint stiffness / arthritis - because of their stocky build and high risk for weight gain, they may develop joint issues as they age.
5. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) - this inherited condition causes cysts in the kidneys.
Don't forget to factor in the regular grooming to reduce mattings. Either way, we still love them anyways!
