Slip Leads, are they good or bad?

slip leads

Following on from our previous article where we previously discussed the use of a halti, it's time to discuss the use of a slip lead' the good, the bad and the things to think about. Firstly, we need to define a a slip lead (for all the new pawrents). A slip lead is a a loop that tightens around the dog’s neck when they pull which can be useful in some situations—but it’s easy to misuse, and it’s not the best default for most pet dogs.

The pros about a slip lead is that it offers short-term control, such as, transporting a dog from the house to the car etc. to more long-term control which helps to aid specific training goals and loose-lead walking. The downside of a slip lead which is important to note and typically why many owners avoid them. A slip lead can apply unneccessary pressure to the neck and can become easily misused and can increase pulling. If a slip lead is constant applying pressure rather than clear communication, it can become a downward spiral and it's worth swapping walking tools and train lead loose walking again.

I guess you're asking yourself, should you use one?

For most everyday dog owners: a slip lead is probably not as your main walking tool, unless advised by a dog trainer. We would prefer to advise a well-fitted harness (especially front-clip) to help reduce any misuse or injuries.
