Would We Recommend A Dog Harness?

Is a dog harness worth it?

A dog harness is one of the most common walking tools, and for most dogs it’s a solid, safe choice but it’s not always ideal. We'll go into pros and cons of the harness to help make you a decision!
Here's a list of pros for a dog harness:
Less strain on the neck because unlike collars or slip leads (as mentioned in our previous articles), a harness helps to spread pressure across the chest and shoulders. That’s especially important for small dogs or breeds prone to airway issues.
Harnesses can be good for dogs that pull as you can front-clip to help turn the dog back toward you, making pulling less effective. It also gives you better control to help work at training.
A harness can also offer more security for nervous or reactive dogs as the harnesses are well-fitted.
They can be more comfortable for longer walks!
Although they offer a lot of pros, there can be a few cons to consider:
A dog harness can encourage pulling as it can tap into that sled dog effect.
Fit really matters so it can be expensive to trial the best ones for your dog. Similarly, a poorly fitted harness can rub, restrict movement, or even cause joint issues over time.
They can offer less precise control than a head collar as some dogs learn to lean into it. It's up to you what you fancy and what's best for your dog at the end of the day. A harness does not correct lead manners at the end of the day, the baseline will still need training and improving but a harness offers better control.
